Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy
Apprenticeships are work-based courses which involve learning and gaining qualifications while working for an employer. An apprentice works at the employer’s premises, gaining practical experience and skills while working towards a qualification which is relevant to their job.
Hairdressers will be able to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using a range of techniques, style and finish hair to create variety of looks, and colour and lighten hair for ladies and men. Hairdressers must be able to work with all hair types ranging from straight hair to very curly, wiry hair. They also need to be able to carry out consultations with clients, demonstrate the professionalism, values, behaviours, communication skills and safe working practices associated with their role and be able to work without supervision to a high level of precision, with exceptional client care skills.
All apprentices will complete the core skills and knowledge which include:
• Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
• Cut hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks
• Style and finish hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks
• Colour and lighten hair using a range of techniques
• Options (choose one)
• Perming hair
• Hair relaxing treatments and techniques
• Hair extension services

The knowledge, skills and behaviours for this role will be developed over the duration of the apprenticeship.
Maths and English will be embedded within the apprenticeship.
Learners will attend Doncaster College on a day release basis. A minimum of 6 hours per week will be spent on working towards the apprenticeship standard. Apprentices will be supported by 1:1 meetings in the workplace by their dedicated Programme Tutor. Additional learning resources and information will be made available online to ensure a fully blended learning experience.
Assessment Method
All apprentices must undertake an independent end- point assessment which is a synoptic assessment of the knowledge, skills and behaviours that have been learnt throughout the apprenticeship. The purpose of the assessment is to make sure the apprentice meets the standard set by employers and are fully competent in the occupation.

Hairdressing and beauty salon managers and proprietors plan, organise, direct and co-ordinate the activities and resources of hairdressing and nail salons, beauty treatment, pet grooming and similar establishments.
Job holders in this unit group perform a variety of leisure and travel service occupations.
Beauticians and related workers give facial and body beauty treatments, apply cosmetics and dress wigs.
