Doncaster College Students Celebrate the Decision to Reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport

Posted: 17/09/2025

Eight Doncaster College Travel and Tourism students proudly represented the College at Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) on 9 September, joining local leaders and stakeholders to celebrate the historic decision to reopen the airport.

Students Show Support for the Airport’s Return

The students attended a special event highlighting what the reopening of DSA will mean for South Yorkshire, from creating jobs to boosting local industries. They were invited to share their views on how the decision will impact young people and future careers across the region.

One student, Summer, was invited to deliver a speech before welcoming South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard to the stage.

Summer said, “I’ve always dreamed of becoming a flight attendant, and after today, it makes me really happy to feel one step closer to that dream.

When I started my Travel and Tourism course, DSA was closed and I didn’t know where my future lay, or if I could stay living in South Yorkshire.

It means we can welcome tourists to one of the UK’s up-and-coming destinations. It means job opportunities can be brought back that were lost, and most importantly, it means we’ll be able to fly directly to Benidorm.”

South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard praised the decision, adding:

“The plan we have backed today is more than holiday flights or passenger numbers. It’s a long-term commitment to drive jobs, growth and opportunities in sustainable aviation, advanced manufacturing, freight and even the defence sector, here in South Yorkshire.”

A Bright Future for Doncaster Students and South Yorkshire

The event marked an exciting milestone for Doncaster College students, showcasing how the return of Doncaster Sheffield Airport could open doors for future careers, not only in travel and tourism but also in other industries.

Donna Robinson, Team Leader at Doncaster College, said:

“We’re so happy to hear the airport will be reopening. It’s fantastic news for our travel and tourism students, but it’ll also bring new opportunities right across the College, from catering to engineering and more. It’s not just about aviation; it’s a real boost for everyone in South Yorkshire.

I’m also really proud of how our students represented Doncaster College today, and especially proud of Summer for bravely standing up to speak and introduce Oliver.”

Doncaster College would like to give a special thank you to the Travel and Tourism students who represented the College so brilliantly: Eleanor, Evie , Hannah, Jessica, Karla, Ruby, Sophia, and Summer.

We’re incredibly proud of each of you and wish you all the best as you continue your studies and work towards exciting careers in the travel and tourism industry.
