DN Colleges Group hit double their target for the Apprenticeships challenge!

Posted: 27/09/2021

Starting in May, DN Colleges Group, including Doncaster College, Doncaster College and their sites at British Steel, Scunthorpe; Humber Energy Skills Training Academy, Hull and CATCH, Immingham, set the challenge to take on ‘100 Apprentices in 100 Days’. The result is over 200 new apprentices starting during May to September.

The impact of Covid during the last 18 months, for young people in particular, had meant less job opportunities in our local area during this time. To combat this the College set a target to increase activity with employers and to encourage them to take on traineeships and apprenticeships. By using apprenticeships to upskill existing staff to support progression, therefore potentially opening up employment opportunities as individuals progress; and also using apprenticeships to recruit new staff of all ages into employment This will help stimulate the economy and enable employers to invest in their main resource – people.

DN Colleges Group have worked with employers across the region creating a wide range of new opportunities for both employers and individuals of all ages. At the same time the College has also seen demand increase in response to businesses being able to re-open their doors or increase trading again as Covid impact reduces and regulations reduce.

Jill Cooper,  Executive Director Employer Engagement & Projects says ‘We are delighted that so many employers have responded to the challenge both from ourselves and in response to their own business needs to recruit and progress staff through the use of apprenticeships. From school leaver to senior managers, our offer targets key sectors locally and we are seeing substantial growth in areas such as engineering, manufacturing, construction, health and business support sectors.. If we had one request it would be that more individuals, of all ages, also look at apprenticeships as a fantastic start to their career or a way to find progression with their existing or a new employer, as we have consistent fantastic vacancies that people can apply for.’

If you are interested in recruiting an apprentice for your business or want to find out more about apprenticeships for yourself, contact the College’s business development team by emailing employertraining@dncolleges.ac.uk or calling the College on 01302 553553 and ask for the business
