Summer of Skills: How an Apprenticeship Helped Me Build My Career

Posted: 01/07/2026

As part of our Summer of Skills campaign, we’re celebrating the real stories of learners who have developed new skills and built successful careers through apprenticeships.

Former Doncaster College apprentice Ava Laverick shares how her apprenticeship gave her the experience and opportunities to kickstart her career.

Finding the right path

Before leaving school, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I wanted to start earning money and build a career, but I also knew that staying in a traditional classroom environment wasn’t the right choice for me.

That’s when I stumbled upon the idea of an apprenticeship. After hearing positive recommendations from people who had completed apprenticeships and others who worked at St Leger Homes, I decided to apply.

Learning on the job

My experience at St Leger Homes is something I’ll never forget. The support I received throughout my apprenticeship, and even now, has been incredible.

I was encouraged to reach my full potential, stay curious and continually develop my skills. My manager believed in me from day one and played a huge role in helping me grow, both professionally and personally. She’s had a lasting impact on my career and the person I am today.

Support every step of the way

Doncaster College was also a huge part of my apprenticeship journey.

Every Tuesday, I attended college, where I learned new skills and strengthened my knowledge. I was supported by fantastic tutors who all brought something different to my learning experience. They were always available to answer questions, offer guidance and check in on how things were going at work.

Thanks to their encouragement and support, I achieved a Distinction in my apprenticeship.

Having support from both my employer and Doncaster College made all the difference and helped me get the very best from my apprenticeship.

Building skills for the future

My apprenticeship gave me so much more than a qualification. I developed valuable workplace skills, built confidence and met people who continue to support me in my career today.

After completing my apprenticeship, I secured my first permanent role within the Repairs and Maintenance Team at St Leger Homes.

One of the biggest lessons I learned is that there’s no right or wrong time to start an apprenticeship. Whether you’re leaving school or changing careers, it’s never too late to learn.

My advice

The one thing I would say to someone who is aspiring to do an apprenticeship is – GO FOR IT!

Apply for the opportunities that interest you, challenge yourself to learn something new and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. You never know where an apprenticeship could take you or the opportunities it could open up.
