In 2015, Syed made a life-changing move from Bangladesh to Doncaster to pursue higher education. What started as a step into the unknown became a journey that shaped his career.
“I chose Doncaster for the industry connections they have and the wonderful staff. I was able to validate these findings after I spent two years there completing my HND in Mechanical Engineering.”
Syed quickly settled into student life at Doncaster College, forming friendships with classmates from different backgrounds, many of whom were already working in industry while studying. “I made friends who were working and completing their HNDs, and I was able to learn a lot from them while sharing my own experience from a different region,” he said.
Building Skills for the Future
During his time studying Mechanical Engineering, Syed discovered just how valuable the College’s industry connections and supportive teaching team could be.
“For current students, I would say to engage with the teachers and staff as much as possible and never hesitate to ask questions. They are there to support you, and they are super helpful,” he said.
He encourages anyone considering studying at Doncaster College or University Campus Doncaster to take advantage of its facilities and central location. “It’s an amazing place to study with great staff and excellent facilities, right in the heart of Doncaster,” he added.
His hard work paid off – Syed graduated with Distinction and was able to progress to top UK universities.
From Doncaster to The Fast Lane
After completing his HND, Syed went on to achieve a BSc in Automotive Engineering from the University of Brighton and a Postgraduate Diploma in Motorsports Engineering from Oxford Brookes University.
While at Oxford Brookes, he became part of Oxford Brookes Racing, one of the UK’s leading Formula Student teams.
“I was able to contribute towards developing and building an electric race car for a student-led engineering design competition,” Syed explained.
Now back home in Bangladesh, Syed works for a consulting firm and continues to share his passion for engineering. “I’m promoting STEM and practical projects at universities in my home country and sharing the learnings I gained from Doncaster College,” he said. “I want to apply the best practices and inspire the next generation of engineers.”
Reflecting on his time at Doncaster College, Syed says the experience went far beyond academics.
“Doncaster College played a big role in my academic life. My first time living abroad, and the college was supportive in all phases of my studies. I never felt like I was alone, the friendliness of Doncaster College was my highlight.”
Syed’s story shows how the right support and a strong foundation can open doors to incredible opportunities.
