As many young people consider their next steps this summer, apprenticeships continue to offer one of the most effective ways into a career. They allow learners to earn while they learn, gain workplace experience and an industry-recognised qualification all whilst not gaining any student debt.
For employers, apprenticeships provide an opportunity to develop future talent, address skill shortages and build a workforce their business needs now and in the future.
At DN Colleges Group, we work with employers across South Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire to create apprenticeship opportunities that help learners and businesses thrive. Through our Summer of Skills campaign, we’re encouraging both employers and future apprentices to discover the benefits of apprenticeships.

Developing Future Talent at Don Valley Engineering
Don Valley Engineering has seen firsthand how apprenticeships benefit both learners and employers.
Craig Longley, Project Manager, said:
“It’s been great to get the enthusiasm and engagement from our apprentice. Being able to mould young talent into the way that we work as a business means we can make learning far more specific to the industry.”
He believes apprentices are vital to the future of engineering:
“We need a lot of new talent and young minds coming into the industry to strengthen our position from both a technological point of view and to support the future workforce.”
Director Roy Baker also highlights the long-term value apprentices bring to the business:
“We’ve taken on a number of apprentices over the years, and it’s been a very positive experience. It’s important for the longevity of the company, and it’s important to give young people opportunities.”
Learning While Earning
For apprentice Cost Engineer Melina Chapman, an apprenticeship offered a route into higher education while gaining valuable industry experience.
“I would absolutely recommend doing an apprenticeship. It gives you hands-on experience alongside the theoretical knowledge you need.”
Level 4 Manufacturing Technician apprentice Finn Hawksworth agrees:
“You get experience both at college and at work. The people around you can teach you, and the people with more experience can help you learn as well.”
