Doncaster College launches new immersive classroom to enhance learning

Posted: 09/09/2025

Doncaster College has introduced a new immersive classroom designed to transform the learning experience with cutting-edge digital technology.

The development comes in response to feedback from employers across the region, highlighting skills gaps between traditional classroom learning and the modern workplace. Funding from the UK Government, alongside investment from DN Colleges Group, has supported the creation of this innovative, cross-campus training resource for students and educators.

The immersive classroom features wall-to-wall digital screens, interactive displays, VR headsets, and tracking cameras. In partnership with local employers, it will provide students with virtual ‘on-the-job’ experiences, simulating real-world environments to help prepare them for employment. This approach ensures that students gain practical, in-demand skills while giving employers access to better-prepared recruits.

A spokesperson for DN Colleges Group said, “The project aims to increase the number of employers and learners accessing education to meet the vital needs of the local labour market.”

The classroom has already been used in interactive sessions by the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme to support teamwork, communication, and social skills, giving students an engaging and dynamic learning experience.

Stacey Blackwell, the programme lead, said, “As part of their programme, we have a section of the award where I deliver team building and ice breakers using the new digital technology of the immersive classroom. The feedback from the students was very positive, and they were blown away by the screen and having the music throughout too. There is a demand for this type of session and technology for the future.”

The immersive classroom is part of Doncaster College’s ongoing commitment to providing students with innovative learning environments and the skills needed to succeed in a rapidly evolving workplace. The College plans to continue exploring new technologies to further enrich teaching and learning across all areas of study.
