Students Compete in Patisserie Competition as part of WorldSkills UK

Posted: 24/03/2026

Pastry students from North Lindsey College and Doncaster College recently went head-to-head in the latest WorldSkills UK endorsed skills competition, where they were challenged to create a classic mille-feuille.

The competition began with an in-class stage, where the highest-scoring students were selected and placed into teams to represent their college. These teams then competed against each other, each producing their own unique take on the traditional dessert.

The event was judged by two chefs from The Hope & Anchor in South Ferriby, both former Doncaster College students with extensive experience in pâtisserie.

All 14 students demonstrated dedication and creativity, working to tight deadlines to produce their versions of the mille-feuille, incorporating a variety of fruits, nuts and chocolate.

The competition supported the development of key employability skills, including teamwork, time management, design, organisation, creativity, food safety and technical ability, while also helping to address the skills gap within the pâtisserie and confectionery industry.

After careful deliberation, the judges awarded first place to Ruth and Ruby from Doncaster College for their outstanding tropical-inspired mille-feuille, commenting: “The competition was fun and we have never done anything like this before, so it was a good challenge. We thought we had done well but didn’t think we had won.”

Elliot Williams (Sous Chef at The Hope and Anchor) commented, “It was great to see the passion and enthusiasm of the students. The competition between the two colleges really pushed them to work harder, and we were impressed by the high standards on display. We were pleased to provide feedback to help them progress and, hopefully, inspire more young people to pursue a career in the industry.”
