Alumni Story: It’s Never Too Late to Learn

Posted: 18/03/2026

When Gareth decided to return to education at 24, he didn’t just go back to the classroom – he completely changed his life. From leaving school with no qualifications to now working as a teacher, Gareth’s story proves it’s not too late to start again or change your career with Doncaster College.

From Construction to the Classroom

“I left high school with no qualifications due to behavioural problems,” Gareth explains. “At 24, I decided to revisit education and redeem my past.”

After working in the construction industry for several years, Gareth decided to follow his true passion, music. In 2010, he enrolled on a BTEC in Music Technology at Doncaster College and later progressed to a BA (Hons) Degree in Music Technology.

“At first, I chose Doncaster College for convenience, but I soon realised it was the right place for me. The teachers and staff were so supportive, their human approach made all the difference.”

Learning Life Lessons Along the Way

After completing his degree, Gareth spent a year managing a roofing company in Australia, an experience that boosted his confidence and independence.

But after returning to the UK and during his PGCE at University Campus Doncaster, tragedy struck.

“While working for a roofing company, an 8×4 board fell from a three-storey building and hit me on the head, fracturing my skull,” Gareth recalls.

Despite a long recovery, he refused to give up. “With determination, I managed to complete my PGCE on time and found a role at Higher Rhythm in Doncaster,” he said. “I worked with vulnerable children and adults through music, embedding maths into music activities. I was very successful in the role and found it incredibly rewarding.”

Returning to Doncaster College – This Time as Staff

When project funding came to an end, Gareth spotted a job back at Doncaster College, this time, on the other side of the classroom.

“I saw a job advertised as a Multi Skills Technician, applied, and got the job,” he said.

Since joining the team, Gareth has continued to grow his skills. He’s completed the Let’s Teach programme, covered lessons for teachers, and enrolled on a City & Guilds Level 2 Bricklaying course, all while preparing to start as a Bricklaying Teacher.

“My hopes for the future have already become a reality within nine months of starting. My aim was to be a teacher at Doncaster College to create opportunities for people in my hometown and community, and I became a teacher in September 2025.”

“It’s Never Too Late to Learn”

Now thriving in his role, Gareth encourages others of any age to take that same step.

“Don’t waste early opportunities, but if you do, it’s never too late to start again. Whether you’re practical or academic, if you find something you’re passionate about, you can succeed. Education opens doors and shows future employers your willingness to grow.”

Reflecting on his journey, Gareth says:

“I’ve had an amazing experience with Doncaster College. I have a lot to be thankful for; I wouldn’t be where I am without them. The college gave me knowledge and confidence I never thought I could have.”
