Just left school and are thinking about starting an apprenticeship, but not sure where to begin? You’re not alone, and you’re in the right place!
We’ve broken down everything you need to know into 6 simple steps to help you find and apply for an apprenticeship. Let’s get started!
Step 1: Understand what an apprenticeship is
An apprenticeship is a job where you get paid, gain work experience, and study at college all at the same time.
You will:
- Work with a real company
- Go to college 1-2 days a week
- Earn a wage while you train
- Gain a nationally recognised qualification
For school leavers, the typical entry-level options are:
- Level 2 (Intermediate): Equivalent to 5 GCSEs.
- Level 3 (Advanced): Equivalent to 2 A-levels.
Most apprenticeships last 1-3 years, depending on the job and the level.

Step 3: Research companies you’re interested in
Before applying, take time to learn about the companies’ offering apprenticeships. This helps you stand out.
Make sure to check:
- What the company does
- Their values and culture
- What kind of roles do they offer

Top tip: Show your enthusiasm! In your cover letter, explain why you’re excited about the apprenticeship and the company; this’ll make you stand out above other applicants.
Step 6: Get ready for interviews
Great news! You’ve been invited for an interview; it’s time to get ready to shine.
Before the big day, make sure you have:
- Practiced answering common interview questions using the STAR method. Common questions include:
- “Why do you want this apprenticeship?”
- “Tell me about yourself.”
- “What are your future goals?”
- Plan what to wear (make sure you’re smart and tidy!)
- Prepare some questions to ask the employer
Top tip: You can attend a mock interview with our apprenticeship team to help you feel more comfortable and prepared.
