From long locks to a brilliant bob: a big chop for charity at Doncaster College.

Posted: 20/10/2021

Doncaster College Health and Social Care lecturer, Emma Mckenzie recently underwent a transformation in the college’s commercial hair and beauty salon all in aid of a good cause. Emma took to the salon chair and had a whopping 30cm of hair cut off to send to the Little Princess Trust, a charity that makes wigs for children with cancer.

The Little Princess Trust charity makes real hair wigs which they gift to children and young people experiencing the devastating effects of hair loss due to cancer treatments. They collect hair donations for these wigs, much like the fantastic donation by Emma. Since establishment in 2006, the Little Princess Trust has supplied over 8000 wigs to young people, matching the wigs to the young person’s natural hair and styling them to help them feel more themselves again.

The charity also does amazing work with the monetary donations they receive, funding academics and organisations in researching causes of paediatric cancer.

When speaking to Emma, she made it clear how important donating hair to the Little Princess Trust is to her; with her goal being to raise awareness of the charity and inspire others. This passion is only reinforced with her role as a Health and Social Care tutor and the lessons she teaches her students. Amazingly, this is not the first time that Emma has donated her hair to this good cause, with this hair cut being her third and her donations totaling 90cm!

Emma commented on the cut, saying ‘I have donated my hair three times to charity, this was a life goal. I have now achieved it. My hair grows quickly, and it is for such a lovely charity. I hope my hair goes on to make a wig that will put a smile back on a child’s face at such a difficult time.’

Emma’s haircut was performed on campus in our Hair and Beauty salon by Level 3 Hair student Rebecca Halbeisen. Rebecca has done a great job on Emma’s new style and was able to show the skills she has learned during her time at Doncaster College.

The big chop was an unforgettable act of kindness for a charity that makes a huge difference in children and young people’s lives. If you would like to learn more about the Little Princess Trust and how you can donate your hair visit their website: https://www.littleprincesses.org.uk/
