Doncaster College student, Thomas Turner, has won the Painting and Decorating Associations Junior Apprentice of the Year award, walking away with an amazing £250 cash and over £1000 worth of painting and decorating equipment. Tom went up against apprentices from all over the country and competed at the regional finals in Leeds, where students from 3 different colleges demonstrated a range of their skills to judges.
Tom was nominated by Bagnalls Painting & Decorating Contractors, Doncaster, the company who took him on as an apprentice and with both the support of Bagnalls and Doncaster College, was able to prove his skills to this prestigious national association. Tom, along with his work-placement and college mentors, were invited to an evening of glitz at the exciting awards ceremony in London, where all the participants’ skills were celebrated.
Thomas’ associate at Bagnalls, Tom Harris, commented “We are all extremely proud of Tom. He has been doing excellent work since he started with Bagnalls in June 2019, so we had no hesitation in selecting Tom to represent Bagnalls Doncaster for the PDA Apprentice of the Year Competition. Tom works to our core values of Safety and Reliability, and consistently works to the high standards of workmanship that Bagnalls prides itself on. We hope he will have a long and happy future here in the Doncaster branch.”
Tom’s tutor at Doncaster College, Glen Galbraith, said ‘Thomas battled through his own anxieties prior to taking part in the competition, but with practice, hard work, and a determination to succeed, Thomas was victorious and should be proud of what he has achieved.’
When asked about his amazing achievement winning this award Tom said, ‘I was nervous, but it was really good, and I’m happy to have been nominated by Bagnalls and supported by the college. This year I competed in the Junior competition and I am hoping to compete again next year, as a senior.’
A huge congratulations to Tom on winning this brilliant award and best of luck in both his apprenticeship and in future competitions
