College Students Gain English Inspiration by Local Author

Posted: 06/01/2021

DN Colleges Group welcomed local author, Nik Perring to deliver an exclusive student masterclass to enhance their English skills. Nik has published many books in his 15 years of experience including the popular short story collection ‘Not So Perfect’ and children’s book ‘I Met a Roman Last Night, What Did You Do?’, to name just a few. His expertise doesn’t end there as Nik is an editor, teacher of writing, and mentor, not to mention he has worked with UNICEF, the BBC, and is ‘Writer in Residence’ for Sheffield’s Year of Reading.

The session held by Nik on ‘Writing Ghosts’ focused on writing about the gothic, ghosts, monsters, and all things terrifying. This being a great opportunity for students to refine their writing skills, develop their English ability, and try something new. Nik commented “I’m always thrilled to be asked to work with DN Colleges Group – I’ve had a number of really positive experiences there, and I’m especially excited about this as the gothic and ghosts are something I love.”

With his personal writing experience and his time as a key facilitator at Hive South Yorkshire, Nik is able to provide the students of Doncaster College and North Lindsey College with an invaluable experience. Nik said “At Hive, we’ve been providing provision for six years across South Yorkshire (regular groups in Doncaster, Barnsley, Rotherham, and Sheffield); writers’ days, a community and a whole wealth of opportunities and mentoring to all regardless of ability or location. From nervous first timers who need a little confidence to more seasoned scribblers (young people in our network have won the BBC Young Writer Award, The Foyle, Northern Writers Awards).”

The virtual event hosted by Rachael Martindale, Senior Lead for English, is just one example of the range of experiences available for students within the DN Colleges Group. With the purpose of helping students gain confidence and expert advice, this virtual talk will be a chance for students to develop their skills in a different and interesting way. Talking on the masterclass Rachael commented “This is another exciting opportunity for our students at DN Colleges as we move closer to the exams. The skills Nik will share will further enhance their ability to write creativity in their exam and help our students achieve the grade they deserve.”
